Others fade quietly once the initial excitement passes. The trouble is that hype and substance often look identical at first: both come with confident predictions, media coverage, and investment. Distinguishing them matters because misplaced enthusiasm wastes money, misdirects policy, and can leave the public either needlessly alarmed or badly let down when promises fail to materialise.

The harder step is scaling that into something reliable, affordable, and safe under everyday conditions. Genuine progress usually shows a track record of narrowing that gap over time, with incremental real-world deployments rather than a permanently imminent breakthrough.
It is also worth watching how proponents respond to setbacks or criticism. Fields with real substance tend to treat failures as useful information that refines the technology. Hype tends to treat any setback as an unfair attack or a temporary delay before the original grand claim is realised unchanged.

Extremely confident, near-term predictions for complex technological or societal change should be treated sceptically, particularly when the same predictions have already slipped once or twice.
