How to make a website colorblind-friendly

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

Since a website is developed with the purpose of providing people with information, one must ensure that the website is accessible to all. If a reader find it difficult to access information on a website, then designing the page doesn’t make sense. Apart from using a design that is soothing for the eyes and a language that the mass is comfortable with, a website should think about the people who are colorblind. Research shows that 6 to 8 percent of people in European countries are colorblind and they face maximum difficulty in distinguishing two colors-red and green. Since you are developing a website to serve everybody and not a particular section of people, you must keep in mind this problem of the colorblind people.

There are a few things that you can do to make your website and its contents colorblind-friendly.

The first thing that you can do is completely avoid the use of any color to specify anything. That will minimize your risk of making the website inaccessible to colorblind people.

Avoid using red and green color on your website contents. There are hundreds of other shades that you can use to fulfill your purposes. Try some other color combinations to avoid the risk.

Red and green are mostly used in websites to signify ’stop’ and ‘go’. Besides red is a good highlighter. So while highlighting something on your page with red colored fonts also uses some icons for it so that the colorblind people can understand its importance.

De saturates the images to be used on your webpages. De saturation will remove all colors from the image and there will be no chance of confusion for the colorblind.

Never use red and green color together as that will make your site completely inaccessible for the colorblind. Try some alternative to serve the purpose of blending red and green.

Another smart thing that you can do is show your website to a colorblind person. If that person is okay with it, you can relax and if he/points any difficulty you can make necessary changes and get it checked.

Chose your colors being bit aware as the colors you are using might make a negative impact on the colorblind people because those ways you will succeed in making them understand that the colored portions are important.
